The Problem with Jon Stewart

Hosted by Jon Stewart, this late night talk show explored the world’s “problems” and strategized solutions. Filmed in front of a live studio audience for both seasons, Stewart used comedy to mitigate the tension when taking a deep dive into divisive topics. First airing in September 2021 and concluding in October of 2023; TV Tech provided the necessary technical oversight to facilitate this project’s needs throughout its entire run.
This project sets itself apart from traditional talk shows and late night news programs by establishing a more long term journalistic approach. With long gaps between studio tapings came the need for a studio that’s “light weight” in its design. Able to be fully assembled in just a couple days, then immediately disassembled and safely packed up for later use. The design also needed to have the same versatility as The Daily Show’s live news room; with live switching, high fidelity graphics, and capability for remote correspondents. But the greater challenge was reconciling these production needs with future-proof specifications character of an Apple Tv production. The Sony PMW-F55 and supporting infrastructure allowed us to seamlessly integrate 4K resolution with centralized capture in a wide color-gamut. This guaranteed a cinematic look that will continue to look great on future consumer hardware.
The production also distinguished itself by establishing deeper intimacy with both the program’s guests, and with the audience. Predominantly taped in a studio just 47’ wide, the small audience sits just feet from the host, requiring very creative camera positioning. Rather than a traditional news anchor desk and guest arm chair, the set has a conference table at its center where guests join the host for a roundtable discussion. And for any guests who can’t make it in person, our partners at Fuse Technical Group provided a high fidelity large LED screen to make it feel like they’re still in the room with us.
Thank you to Jon Stewart, JTS Productions, and Apple Tv Plus. It’s been a privilege to serve this project.
